Band members are required to attend weekly private lessons with a tutor in addition to their band rehearsals.
Lessons normally commence in the second week of term 1. Payment of tutors is a private arrangement, in addition to band fees. Tutorial fees range from $35 to $50 for an individual 30-minute lesson.
Please ask your tutor if your child is ready for an AMEB exam, it is a great way to measure progress and receive independent feedback.
To progress as musicians, your child should practice most days of the week. Beginners would be expected to practice for approximately 15 minutes at a time, and increase practice time as they develop. Your child’s tutor will advise on this as well, and provide material such as scales, in addition to band repertoire, for your child to practice.

Near the end of each year, each member of Training Band and Intermediate Band will attend an audition with the band directors to assess their readiness to progress to the next level of band.
As a guide, your child needs to be playing at a level equivalent to AMEB Grade 1 to progress to Intermediate Band, and at Grade 2 level to progress to Concert Band. This enables the members of each band to play music that is suitable for their abilities.
Students must attend private lesson with a tutor in order to progress through the band.
